Safety Improvement - Cyclists and Pedestrians

Dorgan Street to Lawrence Rd

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Syndal South and another exciting year in your child's education. A warm welcome especially to all our new families who have joined the Syndal South community. I hope everyone had a wonderful safe and relaxing school break and I look forward to hearing all about your holiday adventures.

During the school holidays  the residents in this  region of Mt Waverley were provided with information regarding the upgrade of high risk roads in the area.   The proposed works are part of the Safe Systems Road Improvement Program and will improve cycle and pedestrian safety. The works will take place over a 12 week period and will affect streets adjacent and nearby Syndal South Primary School.

Please read the information below in regards to the proposed works.

I have also been in contact with the Monash Council’s Project Manager, Andy Chuo during the school holidays to gain more clarification about the works. He has advised me that when the Vasey Avenue works commence on the 4th March that parents will still be able to access the 2 minute parking zone before and after school.  Vasey Avenue and Taroona Avenue will not be totally closed during works.

During constructions hours the contractor will be undertaking “Shuttle flow” traffic control. Meaning that cars may be stopped for a period of approximately 5 minutes depending on the conditions out on site. The contractor will prioritize the peak traffic (School drop off and pickup) in order to keep the majority moving.

Parents also need to be aware that Lawrence Road, from Montgomery avenue to Oxford street should be avoided until works are completed in these areas. This would be much appreciated. This will help parents avoid delays during drop off and pickup times.

If you have any further questions about the project please contact Andy Chuo - City of Monash - 9518 3715 or otherwise come and chat to me at the office.

Daily Kilo

Welcome Back - hope you have all had a relaxing break and are champing at the bit to get back into the swing of things. The break has given me the opportunity to reflect and freshen up, which is exactly what the Daily Kilo Club is all about.  It replaces the Joggers Club, just in name. The Club is open to all members of our school community including Mums, Dads, Uncles and Aunties. All you have to do to join is to come along on any weekday morning before school and complete a leisurely circuit of our beautiful 1km Waverley Federation Circuit (including a lap of the oval). Individual tally cards are kept, and achievement certificates are presented at assembly, as various milestones are achieved. A great way to keep fit, not to mention the opportunity to catch up on all the goss. In a bid to encourage students to walk or ride to school, Ride/Walk/Scoot to School Passports are also available.

See me at the hall entrance to register.

Prep-2 PE

Physical Education sessions will commence next week, with the emphasis at this early stage on the Basic Fundamental Motor Skills like running, jumping, dodging and leaping. The Perceptual Motor Program will also commence shortly and we are seeking your help.

3-6 PE

Years 3/4 will commence swimming sessions at Huntingtower shortly, as part of the Phys. Ed. Program. Years 5/6 will be heading off to Camp Weekaway for a 5 day camp, as well as participating in an interschool-summer sport round robin, in games of Cricket, Softball, Tee-ball, Rounders and Danish Rounders. The main focus this term is athletics in preparation for the House Athletic Sports and District Athletics Carnival.

Level 3 students participated in a Tennis Clinic today, conducted by Tally Ho Tennis Coach, Danielle Jones. Danielle is holding an open day this Sunday at Tally Ho from 11.30-2.30pm. See advertisement for more details.

SSV Team Vic

Team Vic State Trial Registrations have opened now in Australian Football, Basketball, Cricket, Netball & Soccer. These trials are for high achieving performers and require school principal/PE teacher endorsement to attend.

Parents can visit the appropriate sport page for all the details;, then speak to me about the possibility of nominating as schools are restricted by how many they can nominate.

G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education) WAYS will once again be offering students from our school, a variety of programs throughout the year. The programs are designed to provide gifted and talented children with opportunities for challenge and extension with a group of ‘like-minded’ peers. On receiving notification from G.A.T.E.WAYS, the teachers here at SSPS will distribute expression of interest information flyers to individual children whom they think would benefit from attending such a program. These forms are then taken home for parents to consider. There is no expectation from the school that your child should attend. That decision is yours, however it needs to be made quickly as placements fill quickly. If you would like your child to be considered for such programs you should see your child’s classroom teacher. Go to for more information.

Dad's Army

Calling on all Dad’s who want to enjoy the company of other Dad’s. Dad’s Army is a group of SSPS Dad’s who get together on a regular basis for games of Indoor Cricket, Curry nights, golf weekends and help out at many of our school special events. The group has been going on for many years now, with many of it’s members now former SSPS parents. It’s a great way for new Dad’s to get involved with the SSPS community. Our first game of indoor cricket at Box Hill for this year is next Thursday at 6pm. For more information or to join up, just send Rob Sturgeon an email at or you can Google Syndal Dads Army to find out more. Get on board !

Check out all things PE at our Phys Ed @ SSPS Blog. Thanks to our Sports Captains who will once again keep us posted and be giving away lots of prizes to those who interact.

Here’s to another great year,

Yours in sport,

Charlie Kenez

WOW! We had such a fantastic time over the January school holidays at our Holiday Program! The children got to participate in so many activities, such as, bottle fireflies, baking, making suncatchers, designing their own mugs, making their own snow globes and many more. We also had the waterslide incursion twice, and even an excursion to the movies! What great fun!

I cannot believe my time has come to an end at OSHC and at Syndal South Primary School, with Friday 1st of February being my last day. It is a bittersweet feeling to leave, knowing  of all the children, staff and parents I'm leaving behind, but also looking forward to the adventures I am going to have once I get married and move to Sydney!

I will hold on to each memory I have made whilst working at OSHC, and it has been an absolute privilege watching all the children grow and develop over the years.

A special mention goes to my wonderful colleagues, my fellow OSHC educators - it has been a blast working alongside you over the years and it will be quite hard adjusting to working life without you!

Wishing everyone, children, parents and staff, all the best in the coming years - I will aim to pop in whenever I have the chance. From the bottom of my heart, I will miss you all!

Love, Lisa - over and out!

The OSHC team would like to welcome all families, both new and old, to the OSHC Program for 2019! We hope you all had a safe, healthy and relaxing break.

If you haven't enrolled your child in already, you can find a 2019 enrolment form in the OSHC room at the Parent Desk.

The Before and After School Care fees will be increasing as of the 1st of February and are as follows:

Before School Care
Permanent booking - $10.50 per child per session.
Casual booking - $13.50 per child per session.

After School Care
Permanent booking - $19.50 per child per session.
Casual booking - $22.50 per child per session.

We hope everyone has a fantastic year ahead of them.

School Banking on Thursdays

A friendly reminder that Thursday is our School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit on that day.

For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a cool Dollarmites token. The first token will be received upon the first deposit at school. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can then be redeemed for a range of great, exclusive reward items in recognition of their continued savings behaviour.  Please note that each deposit is registered in the school banking system and the computer system keeps track of when the student is eligible for an award. The actual number of tokens a student may have is not the main basis for earning a reward.

There are two new reward items released each term for students to choose from.

Available in Term 1:

  •  Scented Stackable Highlighter
  •   Snowy Origami Set

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youth saver account, they can start banking straight away.

If your child would like to get involved in the School Banking program, an account can be opened in one of two ways:

  • In branch - visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, such as a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

Calling for School Banking volunteers - we need your help please!

Dear SSPS Parents,

Would you be able to help out with School Banking for about an hour once a month on Thursday mornings at 9am?

Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop regular savings habits and also help our school with vital fundraising.

Not only does our school receive a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 School Banking deposits processed per student but there is also an annual contribution based on total students participating.

We would greatly appreciate anyone’s time as this is a great program for both, students and the school.

Please contact the Office for further information.
