Principal's Report

Dear Families

Congratulations to all the Yr 6 leaders who received a blessing and their badge at the school mass last Friday as they embark on their leadership role for 2020.

We are into our second full week of school and teachers are assessing the students and setting goals. The parent teacher ‘get to know you’ meetings begin next week and the online booking instructions were sent home last Friday with all students in Years 1- 6 and all families are expected to make an appointment. The teachers value meeting with parents to put a face to the name and outlining the class expectations for the year. It is also a time for parents to discuss any relevant information about their child and become familiar with the learning environment and expectations. Research has shown that parent engagement in your child’s education has a positive influence on their overall achievement.

Foundation parents are currently meeting on Wednesdays and do not need to make an appointment at these afternoon sessions.

It is important that all families establish home routines before and after school that involve expectations for your child. These should take into account getting ready in the morning and being on time for school, extra curricular activities, time for reading and homework and expectations for handing in notices from and to school as this assists children to become responsible and build independence.

At the beginning of the year it is important to establish good habits which includes being organised and arriving to school on time ready for learning. The classrooms open at 8.40am so that students can organise unpacking of bags, lunch orders and give in appropriate correspondence ready for meditation at 8.50am. Meditation is an important part of beginning the day as it focusses on the child having a quiet reflective time and provides a calm start to the day.

Parents Association

The AGM was held last night and we welcomed new families to the meeting. All positions were up for election and those currently in positions were re elected:

President - Tania Micallef

Vice President – Eva Bukin

Treasurer – Amanda Manning

Secretary – Rebecca Xavier and Sandy Hope assisting.

Information will be coming home shortly about the major fundraiser which is the colour explosion on Sunday March 15 from 11am.

Newsletter

As mentioned last week the newsletters will be fortnightly and the dates published for the term will be February 27th, March 12th and March 27th.

PROJECT COMPASSION 2020

On Wednesday all the families would have received a Project Compassion box. Over the next 5 weeks we are asking families to donate money to Caritas by placing the money in the box provided. This year’s Project Compassion showcases the many ways we work around the world with our local partners to offer hope to people most vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice.

As Pope Francis said, “The future does have a name… and its name is hope.”

Through your generosity during Project Compassion this year, you are empowering communities with hope and helping those in great need to shape a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Children’s Liturgy

Every Sunday at 9:30am mass children (school age) are welcome to attend Children’s Liturgy. It is located in the small hall just behind the back wall of the church.

At Children’s Liturgy, children listen to the gospel and participate in a variety of activities. After the activity some  children are selected to bring up the gifts at the Offertory Procession.

If any parents would like to be a leader please contact Andrew Davies at the school.

We look forward to seeing your children at mass.

Week 2 of the SAKGP with 3/4 HD

Another great day with the SAKGP as many students were excited and ready to get their hands dirty. Our Carrots and Zucchinis groups were super busy in the garden pulling out lots of weeds and old Cos lettuces. We managed to clear one garden bed out, ready for some planting next week. We also had to get the compost area ready for lots of classroom compost beginning to be collected by our new 3/ 4 compost captains. The harvest basket was filled to the top as we collected our first eggplant, lots of cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and parsley. After snack time, our kitchen was buzzing with busy bees making a delicious vegetable curry, guacamole, tabbouleh salad. We had to make some last minute changes to our bread group and thankfully Mary and Mrs Hovell came to the rescue by helping the Zucchinis group whip up some tasty bread rolls instead. All students, teachers and parents sat down and shared our meal together. Although it was a little spicy for most, it was wonderful to see everyone trying the vegetable curry. It might be a good option for dinner one night this week! If you would like to try any of these meals at home, all recipes used within the SAKGP can be found on the St Mark’s website. Thanks so much for our fabulous adult helpers who came and helped us in the kitchen this week. Kelly (Jai’s Mum), Janette, Mary, Mrs Hovell and Miss Donald we couldn’t have done it without you all.

Please remember if you are available and would like to help us, we would love for you to join us.

Happy gardening and cooking!

Criteria 1 - Eligibility

The applicant must be one of the following:

  1. a parent/carer (of the relevant student) who is:
    • on the first day of term one (28 January 2020) or the first day of term two (14 April 2020) an eligible beneficiary of either a Centrelink Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card; or
    • an eligible beneficiary of a Veterans Affairs Gold Card; or
  2. a temporary foster carer; or
  3. the parent/carer of a student who is 16 years or older and who holds a valid concession card (such as a Youth Allowance Health Care Card or Disability Support Pension Card).

The parent/carer must submit an application to the school prior to the end of term 2.

Parents/carer who receive a carer allowance on behalf of a student, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF payment unless they also meet the above eligibility criterion.

Where the parent/carer is seeking eligibility based on holding a Centrelink Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card, eligibility will be determined when the relevant concession card successfully validates with Centrelink on either the first day of term one or term two.

If the eligible card is in the name of the student, the fund is only granted to that student, not their siblings.

Payment amounts

Payments amounts for 2020 are:

  • $125 per year for eligible primary school students
  • $225 per year for eligible secondary school students.

Payments are made directly to the school and are tied to the student.

  • from March onwards each year where the parent/carer’s concession card is assessed as valid on the first day of term 1; and
  • during term 2 where the parent/carer’s concession card is assessed as valid on the first day of term 2.

Applications can be received over term one and two. Payments are for the application year and cannot be claimed for previous years.
