Term 1, 2017 

The Year 3 students settled into Term One very well. They are enthusiastic about their learning (and homework!) and we have all enjoyed getting to know each other. They have developed their independence and are enjoying the greater responsibilities that come with being in the middle school!

Literacy

Reading

Students have participated in:

  • Guided reading groups, focusing on fluency, expression and comprehension.
  • Silent reading in class each day.
  • Comprehension activities to further develop their skills in inferring information from a text.

Writing

The students have been learning about the genres of ‘Persuasive’ and ‘Narrative’ writing. As this is a focus of NAPLAN, the children have been looking at the various types of literacy elements associated with both of these genres.

 

Grammar/Spelling

Students have completed activities at school to practise their individual Spelling lists which are given out each Monday and tested on Fridays.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

Our main focus for numeracy this term has been number. The areas covered include place value, addition and subtraction involving regrouping, number patterns including skip counting and basic number facts.

Term 2, 2017

Literacy

Reading

During our guided reading sessions the students will continue to learn the skills of predicting, making connections with the text and gaining inferential compared to literal meaning from the text. The students will also learn about aboriginal culture through reading aboriginal dreaming stories.

 

Grammar

The students will focus on punctuation through their writing. They will edit their own and their classmate’s writing looking for correct punctuation and spelling. Other topics covered through spelling sessions are compound words, homophones and plurals.

 

Directed Writing

Joined handwriting will also continue to be a priority with the students learning how to join their letters from a variety of positions. During our writing sessions the children will continue to study a variety of genres with an emphasis on narrative writing. Through the unit ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, the students will look at aboriginal dreaming stories and create their own dreaming stories.

 

Spelling

Individual spelling lists continue to be part of the weekly homework this term, focusing on a different spelling blend each week. The students will also complete activities in the classroom to assist with learning the weekly blend.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

The students will continue to work in differentiated groups focusing on number and the four processes. This term the focus will be on subtraction strategies and learning the times tables.

 

Measurement and Geometry

This term students will learn about time and 3D shapes.

Cultures change over time

 

Lines of inquiry:

  • The importance of country and place to Aboriginal peoples
  • Stories, artefacts and  histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture
  • Impact of settlement on the Aboriginal community

Speaking & Listening

This term the children will be practising their Speaking and Listening skills – they have delivered an oral presentation as part of the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry.

Term 3, 2017

Literacy

This Term Year 3 students will continue to build on their comprehension skills through various text types with a focus on inferring meaning. They will be exposed to a broad variety of reading materials including LiteracyPlanet articles and stories, guided reading books, silent reading books and class novels.

 

The writing focus will be on procedural texts, information reports and different types of poetry. Students will continue to build on their editing skills through writing sessions and cover various letter blends during wordstudy/spelling sessions.

 

During handwriting sessions, the focus will continue on joined writing and letter formation.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

During Term 3 the students will continue to focus on all areas of number, in particular focusing on the relationship between multiplication and division.

 

Measurement and Geometry

In differentiated Maths groups, students will explore many areas of measurement and geometry. They will focus on the units of measurement, length, perimeter, area, mass and shape.

Speaking & Listening

This Term we are focusing on listening carefully and with respect when teachers and other students are speaking.  The students will also  prepare a design brief during inquiry sessions to present to their class.
