Acting Principal's Report

From Carol's desk....

A Great School Community

It is with pride that I say thank you to CHAPS and our school community for providing cupcakes for our students yesterday.  It would have been Jack Power’s 11th birthday on Wednesday, so a cupcake was provided for each of the students in our school. Our students loved it and it was a great way to celebrate the wonderful person that Jack was. The cakes were amazing!  Thank you to CHAPS for organising and coordinating,  the parents who baked them and also to everyone who helped distribute them to the students.

Cyber Safety Parent Night

Last Monday we had an information night for parents on cyber safety. Thank you very much to the parents who attended this event. It was a fantastic night and David, our presenter who is a Federal Police Officer, was able to provide practical information as to how parents can protect their children online. The presentation was part of ThinkUKnow, which aims to empower every Australian to be safe, respectful and resilient online. The program focuses on what young people do online, the challenges they face and what they can do if something goes wrong. The top tips from this program are

  • Start the cyber safety conversation with your child and let them teach you what they do online.
  • Stay in the know – take an interest in how your child uses technology. Why not have a go and try some of the aps yourself?
  • Speak to your child about respectful relationships.
  • Create a family online safety contract.  Visit thinkuknow.org.au for ideas.
  • Know what your kids are doing online, who they are friends with, and who they may be talking to.

You can find out more information about how to stay safe online at www.thinkuknow.org.au

Also, visit Mia’s MessageBoard page later in this newsletter, for some great advice on kids’ gaming and how to police it without aggravation.

Indonesian Teacher

Next term we welcome a new LOTE/Indonesian teacher to our school. Shannon Irwan starts at the beginning of Term 4. Shannon is passionate about teaching students about the Indonesian culture as well as the language.

End of Term

Term 3 finishes at the end of this week, so a reminder that school ends at 1.30pm on Friday.  School resumes on Monday October 8th for an 11 week Term 4.

Also a reminder that we have a Pupil Free Day on Monday November 5th, prior to Cup Day, so teachers can plan for 2019,.

Performing Arts News

Last Thursday and Friday, State School Spectacular students got up bright and early and headed into Melbourne Arena for two big dress rehearsals. On Saturday we performed in two shows:  a matinee during the afternoon and another in the evening.  It was amazing being able to watch the event from our seats in the mass choir and we all really enjoyed the experience!

CHPS will be participating in State School Spectacular again next year, it will be open for Year 5 and 6 students.  If you love singing you should definitely sign up!

Prep & Junior House Cross Country

Next term we are having the Prep & Junior House Cross Country event on Tuesday October 23rd.  It is the 2nd week back and hopefully we will have lots of parent volunteers assisting the supervision of corners to make sure all students are safe when running around the school.  The Preps will run 1km and the Year 1 / 2 students will be running 1.5kms.  The students have been training for their run during Huff n Puff at the beginning of their PE lessons.  This is an event which does not require parent consent, as it is run within the boundary of the school, however it will still go out on Compass so that parents can complete the notice if they are able to assist with supervision on that morning. We would really appreciate parental help with this, as the staff will be busy supervising their classes.  Please either email me with a response or have your child hand in the notice to their class teacher or the office.  The first race will be the Year 2 Boys, followed by the Year 2 Girls, then Year 1 Boys, Year 1 Girls, Prep Boys and Prep Girls.  All children who complete the course will earn points for their House.  Children can wear their House colours for the event. Hope you can make it!

Walk to School Week

This year, Croydon Hills PS is holding Walk to School Week, beginning in week 2 of Term 4,  October 15th through to October 19th.  Students will have the opportunity to meet at one of four designated meeting areas near to the school (please see map attached below).  They will then walk to school together with other students, teachers and parents from the school community to support sustainable living and healthy lifestyles.  To finish off a great week we will be celebrating with a Crazy Sock day on Friday 19th.

We are looking for parent volunteers to assist on the mornings, helping to guide and direct the students as they walk to school.  Volunteers would have to meet at one of the designated walk stations at 8:20am, ready to begin walking with the students at 8:30.  If you are able to help out on any day of the week it would be greatly appreciated.  If you are able to help could you please let your classroom teacher know.

Thanks,

The Sustainability Team

FLEXISCHOOLS ONLINE ORDERING

IMPORTANT: PLEASE ENSURE ONLINE ORDERS ARE PLACED FOR THE DAY THE LUNCH IS REQUIRED

Please ensure online orders are placed AND confirmed as we have an increasing number of students with no lunch order at lunchtime.  This causes distress to the students and an extra workload at a busy service time for the Canteen staff.   Orders can be placed days in advance.

This service is available from Monday to Friday via the Flexischools website. Lunch orders can be placed online until 9am each day, we do however have a “late orders menu” which is a very limited menu and will be open for 1 hour from 9am -10am. This option is solely for emergencies and not for regular lunch orders. Please plan ahead and place orders early. Due to limited help we would not be able to accommodate a large volume of late orders. Please note – Sustainable Bags are NOT suitable for online ordering. A paper bag will be provided.

Hoodie samples for sizing will be available in the Uniform Shop during normal operating hours (from Monday 8 October).  Outside of Uniform Shop hours, samples will be available from the school office.

Parenting Resources on Gaming

It's hard to know where to look and who to trust for practical and useful advice on how to parent gaming. I recommend these guys – Institute of Games    http://www.instituteofgames.com/parenting-resources-gaming/

If you go to the link above, you will find ‘The Parent Workbook’ that you can purchase for all the info you need. You will also find their phone number and can make an appointment for a private consultation if that is what you might need.

Here is an excerpt from an article that you might be interested in reading. Follow the link below to read the whole article

‘Could playing Fortnite lead to video game addiction?  The World Health Organisation says yes, but others disagree’

What parents can do:

An important aspect of being a parent today is guiding your child in ways that support them to have healthy attitudes to technology that ensure it becomes a positive aspect of their life.

Three key strategies for this are:

  1. Encourage a blend of physical activity and indoor activity from when your child is young. It’s also important to model this behaviour yourself.
  2. Spend time talking with your child and sometimes playing games with them online. We should not set up an “us vs them” attitude. This strategy allows you to understand your child as a technology user, and to make more informed decisions regarding their technology use.
  3. Use a range of resources to help you understand kids gaming. Beware of sensationalist media headlines that aim to shock you, and instead head for a range of trustworthy sources supported by credible experts and bodies.

Spreading the Sustainable Message

Earlier this week our Senior students displayed their learning and innovative ideas to the rest of the school and the interested wider community, with their Sustainability Expo.  We can all take a lot of positive messages from their hard work and enthusiasm for a sustainable future!
