Youth Awards

Youth Awards - By Imarsha PATHIRANA

I wanted to share with the KDC school community (Facebook/Newsletter/ Website/Compass) that I had the opportunity to attend the City of Melton Youth Awards on the 12th of April at West-Waters Hotel.

I was nominated for a 2019 Melton Council Youth Award presented by the Mayor: Bob Turner. The 5 categories for the Youth Awards are: Being Heard, Being Inclusive, Being All You Can Be, Being Happy and Healthy and Being Connected. I was nominated for and won the Youth Award in the category: Being Heard. This category recognises a young person who has demonstrated leadership within their community, school, work and is regarded by her peers as a positive role model. This young person will have demonstrated a respectful, helpful and positive attitude within the mentioned environments.

In addition to winning the Being Heard Award, I was also lucky to win the prestigious Youth Honours Award for the highest scoring application out of all nominees across the five above award categories.

Year 10 Polish Program

Year 10 PreCAL Program

Beacon Foundation’s POLISH program looks at Work Readiness providing an opportunity for students to prepare for a successful transition from school to work, through the development of competencies such as communication, collaboration, leadership, teamwork, networking and social skills.

On Friday the 17th of May our PRECAL students participated in the program at Keilor Downs College and a luncheon was provided by our Hospitality students.

Business and community members attended the luncheon event and provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop connections with local people and hone the newly acquired skills learnt over the course of the morning in a ‘real world’ setting.

Well done to the PRECAL students who completed the workshop. A big thank to all the guests and teachers who attended and to the KDC hospitality students who prepared and served a wonderful lunch.

Official Opening Of
KDC Library

KDC Library

KDC would like to thank everyone who attended the Official Opening of the "Franklin Forbes KDC Library" on May 7th. We would also like to thank all that have donated books to our collection.

Another big thank you to our Year 11 VET Hospitality for providing delicious refreshments at the opening. There are a few books still available for donation if you wish to contribute to our collection.

Winter Music Concert

Winter Music Concert

Thursday 6th June, 2019 @ 7pm. Stay tuned for photos.............

Today we welcome Mount Albert Grammar School to Keilor Downs College for a friendly match with our Soccer School boys in years 9/10.

The match will be the first international match for any KDC team, and we are thrilled to have our New Zealand friends playing on Australian shores a day after ANZAC Day.

Healthy Eating

Victorian Health Advisory Service Competition.

Rochelle from our KDC canteen has initiated an entry into a Healthy Eating competition run by the Victorian Health Advisory Service.

This involved submitting up to 6 photos displaying the Healthy Eating ethos of the canteen, along with a statement (200 words or less) as to how the first prize of $500 would be utilised.

Canteen Manager Sandra, and team members Sheryl, Janet and Joanne, have brought their enthusiasm and energy to help create the following entry.

Below is her entry.........

My name is Rochelle and I am proud to be part of the Canteen team at Keilor Downs College.

My job there is the cook and I am very focused on providing our students and teachers with healthy food options.

Our menu changes seasonally and we incorporate as many fresh healthy ingredients as we can.

Winning the $500 major prize would be a dream come true!

We have always said that if we had the money we would buy nice storage baskets to sit on our shelves to display whole fruit, popcorn, Vege chips, oats, tissues, etc in.

Also I have had a few students asking me for recipes from time to time.

Which is a wonderful compliment, and it gave me an idea of publishing a KDC Canteen Cookbook to promote healthy eating.

Cooking has always brought me immense joy, and I would love to share my joy and healthy recipes with the students.

So they can re-create healthy food at home for themselves and their families.

In this book I would not only provide recipes but also tips, hints and advice on which foods contain which vitamins and nutrients to help with different functions of the body.
