Principal's Post

Dear Families,

Last week we completed our Prep 2020 Transition program when our 51 new 2020 Preps met their buddies. I think the Year Five students, who will be their buddies next year were more excited than the new preps. I was so proud of our Year Fives as they came into the Fr Reynolds Community Centre, holding their little buddy's hand and introduced themselves to their buddy's parents. There are numerous aspects to our Prep transition program which aim to induct our new parents and students into our wonderful St James community. Many staff, parents and students contribute to this rather large process; its just another example of what we do here at St James as a welcoming, inclusive community. I'd like to thank EVERYONE involved in the transition program.

New School Website

Filming and photo shoots have taken place and the website is currently under construction. Hopefully we can launch it before the end of the year. Stay tuned for more info.

Staff News

I am delighted to announce some staffing news for 2020.

We welcome Veronica Brightwell and Daniel Egan to our teaching staff. They both come with many years experience in other schools. Dani Callinan, who completed the year in 5P following Jacqui Porritt's departure, will  remain with us.

We welcome Betty Antoniou as an additional Learning Support Officer.

Jess Waters will spend more time devoted to Learning Diversity and coordinating and assisting staff cater for the various needs of our students.

We are increasing all Physical Education classes from forty minutes to one hour. Kayleigh Fitzgerald will take on this additional load for one day a week working in partnership with Claire Field who continues in her role as Phys Ed teacher.

Education Board Updates

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to join our Education Board for 2020. We will be in contact soon.

Classroom K.K

Starting next week each child will draw out the name of another child in their classroom to have as their 'K.K'.  At St James we adopt the ancient German custom of Kris Kindl.  The word means 'Christchild'.  It is a way of showing others the 'Face of Jesus'. We encourage them to do lots of special things for their 'Kris Kindl' (acts of kindness, thoughtfulness or notes with messages) without letting on who they are.  In the last week, each class will have a party and reveal who that special person has been.  They can make their 'Kris Kindl' a gift, special card or if you choose to, you can buy a small gift (up to $5).  The focus is for the children to give of themselves during this Advent season.

Please be aware that this area is a 'Kiss and Drop' zone of 2 minutes during the allotted times.  We ask that you do not park in this area for longer periods during those times.

Parents and Friends

Last week's AGM provided a great opportunity to reflect on the magnificent work our P & F have done throughout 2019 to promote social opportunities as well as raise funds for our St James community.

Funds raised throughout the year are mainly going towards the construction of a new front fence. I am pleased to say that installation of the new fence is planned to commence mid January. This will provide a safer school environment and a more aesthetically pleasing front to our school.

Last week we farewelled and thanked a few members who have given up their time to work so hard on the Parents and Friends Committee. In particular, I'd like to thank and acknowledge Daniela Migliorati and Jen Everett for their enormous contributions over the past few years. The work they have done has set our P & F up for future success.

Looking towards 2020, we have a large number of volunteers to the various roles within the P & F.  A special  mention to our team of Leaders; Sheleigh Keating, Claire Doherty and Kylie Brooks-Verberne.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

Thank you for the generous donations that many families make towards our second hand uniform shop. This supports many families within our St James community.

We are calling on any Year Six families who will not need their school bag for younger siblings to consider donating your schoolbag to the shop.

We are also calling on any families with a Year Five student who will no longer require their new zip jackets because they will be wearing a new Year Six Rugby Top next year, to consider donating this to the second hand uniform shop.

Prep Family Parish  Mass

This Sunday, as we commence the season of Advent, our current Preps will welcome our new Preps for 2020 to our St John's parish community at the 9.45am mass at St John's church.

It would be great to have all families represented and see the church overflowing with members of our community.

Year 5 & 6 Water Program

Year five will enjoy the Inland Water Program at Lysterfield Lake on Tuesday 10 December and Year six are looking forward to developing their skills at the Beach Program on Wednesday 4 December. Both of these programs are run by Life Saving Victoria. Our school features on their website to promote excellence in water safety programs.

Congratulations to Saithirie ( 6C ) who has been accepted  into Australian Girls' Choir  Senior Performance  Group Camerata.

Well done Saithirie !

Education in Faith

Be a Santa to a Senior

Each of our students will spread Christmas messages of hope and joy this festive season.

Organised by Home Instead Senior Care and co-ordinated by Jen Harvey, every student at St. James will write a Christmas card for an anonymous senior.  These will be distributed prior to Christmas.  This activity is enabling our students to take authentic action at this time of year, whilst giving them the time and opportunity to reflect on the true meaning and joys of this season.

Mathematics in Year Five
It is brilliant to hear so many of our Year Five students discussing their learning in their latest mathematics topic, Angles. Clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria help to make the learning very specific to the children and target their point of need.

Massimo - We are learning to use a protractor to measure to different types of angles including reflex angles

Rohan - We are learning the difference between an acute and a reflex angle

Maya - We are learning the exact measurement of an angle to the nearest degree

Spotlight on Learning

Congratulations to the following students who received a student of the week award:

Emily 6C, Lexie 1M, Henry 1M, Isaac 2D, Bethany 2S, Eden 3J, Alec 3J, Neiva 5P and Sienna 5P;

Perfect Procedures in Prep

We are great writers in Prep. Each Monday we write a recount of our weekend and are learning to focus on our individual writing goals. Some of these include adding more detail and descriptive words, re-reading and editing our own work as well as including punctuation. We also have had a go at writing a narrative.

This term we have been learning about the writing genre of a Procedure. Last week we made Fairy bread and wrote about the ‘method. equipment and steps’ we used to make the special treat. We know this type of procedure is called a recipe. It was fun and we enjoyed eating our yummy creations as well as learning how to write a procedure!

Catholic Education Melbourne

Some exciting news to share!

Each year, every school in the Archdiocese of Melbourne is invited to submit up to five pieces of art, that may or may not be selected for entry into the following years Creative Arts Exhibition, held in March.

I’m both excited and proud to announce that four artworks from our school have been selected. (And it’s not even an a St James Art Show year!)

Congratulations to these students :

Amelia B, Prep K - Warm colour Flowers

Isabella D, Year 5P - Patchwork Countryside

Alyssa M Year 6C - Beautiful Birds

Lucy J Year 6C - Smallville

Your artwork is beautiful and appreciated by many. Such talent on display.

Good luck to all concerned.

Digital Technologies

Moving to another school?

Students who are leaving St James will have their accounts closed on Wednesday December 18th.

If you are leaving St James and would like a copy of files in your Google account, you will need to follow the steps in this video clip.  The person in the video only takes a copy of their Google Drive, but you can select your bookmarks, contacts, mail etc if you want to.

The archived file will be emailed to your school address, so you need to do your copying/archiving before your Google account is closed.

I suggest copying your files over the weekend of December 14/15th as your Google account will be closed on Wednesday December 18th.

If you only want to take a copy of your Drive files,  you can manually download all your Drive folders to your home computer or USB if you prefer.

Headphones for 2020

Students will bring home their headphones at the end of the year.  They should be in a suitable condition to use next year.  However, they might need untangling

and the case might need a bit of a clean (or replacing)

If headphones are damaged or missing at the end of the year,

please send $10 to Wendy and she will issue a new set.

Please ensure your child brings their headphones to school for the

assessment sessions in the first week.

Farm Yard Fun

Farm Duty:

November 30th/ Dec 1st - Kowalski (6C)

December 7th/8th - Kohombanwickremage (5F)  and Lee (1D)

Latest Farm Yard pics...

It was immunisation day, today.  Owwww!!!  Thanks to Mrs Bowman for being the brave vet.  Wendy wasn't brave enough to give the injections so she was in charge of holding the goats still.

Families are doing a fantastic job, caring for the animals on the weekends. A big thank you to everybody who has spent time at school to make sure the goats get plenty of fresh air and room to move!

And there's always a crowd to play with the goats at lunchtime!

Christmas Holiday volunteers...

There are only a few spots left on the Farm Duty roster.

Please email Wendy if you want to join in the fun, but let me know if there are specific dates that you can't do.

You need to be prepared to stay at school for an hour or so to give the goats and chickens a run in the fresh air.

Depending on the number of volunteers, you may get 1 or 2 days.

Library News

Return all books by Friday Dec. 6th please.

Students are reminded to return their books on their normal borrowing day this week.  If they have not finished reading books yet, they can hold onto books until the following week, but no later than Friday Dec. 6th

Lost books will need to be paid for.  Late notices and cost of replacement will be sent home

after all children have had the opportunity to return.

Thank you...

A huge thank you must go to our small band of book-covering mums who have worked tirelessly over the year, making sure new books are covered and on the shelves for students to borrow.  You know who you are!  Jo and Wendy would not survive without them!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
