How we organise ourselves 

PREP - TERM 1A, 2017
 
​CENTRAL IDEA

Schools are organised to help us learn and play together

This term the Prep students will begin Show and Tell on Fridays. Each student will be allocated a Friday to bring something related to our Unit of Inquiry. This item could be a book, game or special toy etc.

  • The people who work at our school and their roles, routines and systems
  • The ways we can get along with each other

Action

Action in the PYP is initiated independently by the student as a result of the learning process. Action may be bringing a book or artefact related to the inquiry to school, or student initiated drawings/posters/research. We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms. If you see your children taking independent action at home encourage them to share their action with their class.

Many people teach us how to be healthy and safe

Students will be asked to bring in items for Show and Tell that are related to this Unit of Inquiry. For example: bike helmets, goggles, high visibility vests etc, and speak about the importance of these items.

Senses help people express their ideas

Throughout this Unit of Inquiry the students will undertake many activities involving group work, exploration of their outside environment and experimenting with a variety of materials to discover their senses.

Family histories provide insight into culture

During this Unit the students are asked to speak to their families about their own family traditions and events they celebrate that makes their family special. They are also asked to talk to their grandparents about changes over time and may like to bring in a special artefact for Show and Tell.

How the world works 

PREP - TERM 3, 2017
 
​CENTRAL IDEA

Climate and the type of materials available determine the structures that can be built.

During this Unit the students will be looking at different structures and the materials they are made from. They will look at the differences in buildings all around the world and the impact climate and the materials available has on the structures that can be built. The students will investigate materials through their own building experiences and discover the importance of using appropriate materials for the right structures.

  • The way these materials influence the design of the buildings and structures
  • The effect climate has on the design of a house

Students in Prep are encouraged to share their ideas and thoughts about different structures including structures such as houses, buildings and bridges, during show and tell sessions.
