Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

 Welcome to Term Three!

Coming home today is a copy of the Term Planner.

During the term we will be undertaking activities for Science and Book weeks as well as putting a week aside to undertake some Wellness activities.

Cross Country and Athletics carnivals will be organised and we have an Open Evening as well as our annual Fathers’ Day Breakfast.

Along with a range of excursions for classes our Year six group will be on camp in Dwellingup.

The school is investing in new interactive board technology having replaced the first 6 of our current aging projectors in classes. The Eboard provides greater flexibility with the delivery of lessons and is clearer to see and interact with.

Thank you to those parents who came in to assist staff and students from Rooms 5, 6 and 9 recently to do some plantings around the school for National Tree Day.

Over the next two weeks our students will be engaged in Soccer Clinics [PP-Year 2], watching a theatre production of Wicked [Years 4-6], making Beeswax Wraps as part of an incursion promoting reduce, reuse and recycle, travelling to the State Library [PP] and involved in Cross Country [Years 1-6] and the first 100 Days of school. [K-Year 2]

Our Cross Country event on Tuesday of week 3 will involve Years 1[500m] and 2[750m] having a run from about 9:10am and the older students in Years 3 [1km], 4 [1.5km] and 5-6 [2km] running from 1:15pm.

Lunch will be adjusted slightly on this day. A note will come home seeking permission to run on the footpath for Years 3-6.

With Science Week in week 4 there will be an activity on Wednesday between recess and lunch which will involve all students in Years 1-6 placed in mixed age groupings to undertake a task.

If you have a Science background in an area that may be of interest to your child’s class, make contact with the teacher to offer your services. Over the years we have had brilliant presentations on a range of Science related areas!

Please return the slips with payment or direct debit for the ICAS 2019 competitions by Friday the 2nd of August. This year most of the competitions will be undertaken online.

Congratulations to Charlie and Charli now at Melville College for the top results for their year level for the selective Graphic Design, Media course in Semester One!

We have two items of lost property which we have not been able to find owners. The first is a sky blue scooter left in the racks on Hope Street and the second is a Merida flat bar hybrid bike which is gun metal grey with the name in blue left in the racks near the courts. Please contact the office if either of these belong to your family. They were in the racks at the start of the Term 2 Break.

What's Happening

Around the school

Beeswax wraps

This term, Rio Tinto ‘Earth Assist’ will be visiting our school in Week 3, Thursday the 8th and Friday, the 9th August.

Every child from PP-Year 6 will have the opportunity to make their own reusable beeswax sandwich wrap; to take home and wrap their sandwiches in to bring to school. It can be used instead of plastic wrap or foil, easily wiped clean and used again and again, saving you money and most importantly caring for our environment.

Our students will also learn more about ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ and the particular impact that plastics have on our precious environment.

This is a FREE incursion that Mrs. Hewison has kindly coordinated for our school.

We will require parent assistance on the day. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are available.

100th Day of School

This year our Kindy to Yr. 2 students, will celebrate our 100th Day of School on Wednesday, the 7th of August.

During the morning session, students will engage in a number of activities around the number 100. For example, they may make crowns with 100 dots, make 100 and 1000s biscuits, see what a 100 pieces of popcorn looks like before and after it has popped, make a necklace with a 100 pieces of Cheerios and so on.

We look forward to welcoming our Kindy students and their parents to our big school for this event.

Gardening Day

Our PP classes, were very lucky  and received some free native plants from SERCUL.  SERCUL provided these plants to our school as part of the Phosphorus Awareness Project grant it receives from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), which aims to educate the community about the environmental impacts of too many nutrients entering our waterways.

The last Friday in July is National Tree Day so we could not think of a better say to get planting! The students in Pre-Primary and Room 9, and many wonderful parent helpers assisted in the planting of the donated plants on Friday, the 26th of July.

A special thank you to Juls Liggins for her expertise and whose recent ‘books for trees’ initiative purchased more plants for the occasion. Thanks also to Mrs. Colkin for collecting the plants in the holidays and our many parent helpers.

Murdoch Student Teachers

This term, we are fortunate enough to have four Murdoch student teachers, joining our staff to complete their final teaching practicum at WGVPS. We welcome  Daniel Peters (Year 5, Room 2), Danielle Castro (Year 2, Room 9), Bree Falcinella (PP Room 6) and Lucy Hales (PP, Room 5).

We wish them every success.

P & C Day

Friday 26 July was P&C Day WA!  A day to celebrate and say thanks to all the fabulous people who contribute to and support our wonderful Parents & Citizens Association.  You know who you are!  Because of you we have a canteen, the uniform shop, fun social events and a wonderful inclusive community who make things happen, like the recent Yarning circle and new sensory garden.

And watch this space!  We're currently working on a new strategic plan and a new communications board so that we can make our efforts even bigger and better and get even more people involved.

Happy P&C Day!

Call out for Volunteers!

Can you sizzle a sausage?  If so, we need you!  The school has been invited to host the BBQ at the upcoming Sullivan Hall 60th Birthday Party on Sunday 11 August 1-5pm to raise funds for the P&C and we need volunteers.  If you fancy being part of a fabulous community event here in the Valley and can spare an hour of your time, please contact Niki Gretton to get involved -  nikiemma1403@gmail.com
