Principal's Report

Reports

Our reports for Semester 2 will be available to parents early next week and will provide feedback for students as to how they have performed over a range of assessment tasks. Students will be able to see at what level they are currently performing and the recommendations from their teachers as to how they take the next step in the development of their knowledge and skills. The summer break gives all students some time to review the goals they have set for themselves over the past year and set new ones for the 2018 school year. I encourage parents to set aside some time to discuss with their children the feedback from the semester reports as research indicates it is an important step in children taking ownership of their learning and becoming lifelong learners.

Launch of  2017 Shared Stories Anthology

I congratulate the following students who participated in the launch of the 2017 Shared Stories Anthology last Monday at Star of the Sea College in Brighton; Yuhan  Huang, Kaitlyn Suson, Minvi Giray, Tiana Amoretti, David Suson, Donglei Tu, Vanshita Udasi, Kevin Williams, Nadine Pelayo, Shayne Fisher.

Over 30 Catholic Schools in Melbourne participate in the production of Shared stories, which this year saw students contribute art works, short stories and poetry under the theme of  “Journey”. The Anthology is published each year in the State and National Libraries which is a wonderful acknowledgement and  achievement for our students.

In order to receive school notifications that are relevant to your child’s year level you will need to change the APP settings to reflect their 2018 year level.

To do this simply go to the settings section of the APP, turn OFF the year levels you no longer need and turn ON the year levels that your child will be in for 2018.

Shared Stories

On Monday 27 November a group of students from Years 7-12 attended the launch of ‘Shared Stories’, at Star of the Sea College, Brighton. This was an outstanding event representing the best of student writing and artwork across twenty- five Catholic colleges.

Students included

 Year 12

Elena Molinaro and Jade Morris

Year 9

Minvi Giray, Yuhan Huang, Kaitlyn Suson

Year 8

Tiana Amoretti, David Suson, Donglei Tu and Vanshita Udasi

Year 7

Shayne Fisher and Nadine Pelayo

St John’s Principal Mr Tim Hogan and representatives from the Arts and English Learning Area Mrs Tania Robinson and Mr Michael Toomey also attended the event. There were about 500 students in Sebastian Hall, all of whom were either writers or artists. They eagerly browsed through the Anthology ‘Shared Stories’, to see their contributions in a published work.  Afterwards special guests, Mr Glen Manton and Professor Matthew Ryan from the Australian Catholic University, commended the audience.

The anthology will be displayed at the Victorian and National Library, Canberra, so they are now all published artists. It is a significant achievement indeed. I invite parents and friends to take time to peruse the ‘Shared Stories’ anthology at Reception. I am confident you will be inspired by the student excellence, which lies within.

Water Rockets

What better way to finish off a Year 8 Science topic on Rocks than with Rock-et Science?  Students were asked to prepare a water rocket to achieve maximum altitude by experimenting with the water trust to mass ratio.

Well done to Todd Nicolopoulos, MO8 and Wani Suliman, DE8 who were able to get their rocket into the Troposphere.

Adam Cavanagh, Teacher

Barbie Bungee

In Year 8 Maths, students prepared a Linear Model for Barbie Bungee using a Barbie Doll and elastic bands.  The students prepared a linear graph, with the number of elastic bands as the independent variable and drop distance as the dependent variable.

The goal was to get Barbie’s hair to touch the ground from a drop height of 2.2 metres without harming her.  Well done to Martina Dujic (DE6) and Alyssa Mileto (CO1) who were able to accurately apply their Linear Model to achieve the goal.
