From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers, Konnichiwa!

Start of the 2018 School Year

Welcome to the start of the 2018 school year at Grange and what an outstanding start it has been. Our enrolments are now 762 children across 28 classes. This enrolment number has increased from the 721 children we started the school year with in 2017. In years 1-7 we have strictly enforced the school zone and taken no new out of zone enrolments for these year levels. We were able to take some out of zone enrolments at Foundation level this year to maintain four classes at Foundation. So, as you can see we are seeing a changing community at Grange with housing redevelopment and young families moving in and therefore student numbers in the school increasing. The current 762 enrolment number is the largest in the history of Grange Primary School.

A special welcome to our new children and families starting at Grange this year and to the new teaching and support staff joining us at Grange this year. I have attached photos of our staff for 2018 in this newsletter. We have such a skilled and talented staff at Grange- we have an exciting year of learning and progress ahead.

Whole school refurbishment

Over the past few months our school has had over $1,000,000 worth of refurbishment work undertaken to provide improved facilities that better enable contemporary learning practices across the entire school and in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This work is scheduled to be completed over the next two weeks. Our builder, Harrold and Kite have done an outstanding job in minimising the disruption to learning by undertaking major works during the Christmas holiday break. Teachers and support staff have done such a great job in moving and setting up classes for the start of the school, often working many, many hours in their holiday break. The work of teachers, many of whom have moved classrooms, is greatly appreciated and is certainly providing learning environments of excellence where student learning will flourish.

The next stage of refurbishment is the Better Schools work, which is funded at $6,000,000. This work will provide additional classroom space, new toilet facilities, upgraded learning areas, kitchen garden, library, intervention and multi purpose centre, as well as upgraded carparking and play facilities. As the school numbers increase so has OSHC, so additional learning and play space will also support OSHC.

I’ll share with you concept and scoping plans as they are developed. The Better Schools work will be staged over the next few years, therefore minimising school disruption as there will be no need for transportable classrooms to be brought in to house classes on a temporary basis.

Grange is most certainly an exciting place of learning to be at.

We have included photos of some of the areas completed to date.

We look forward to seeing parents at the Acquaintance Nights (see flyer attached)-

BYOD & CYBER SAFETY NIGHT - Parent Information Session

Wednesday 21st February 6.30 p.m. - 8.00p.m.

Parents are invited to attend the school's Bring Your Own Device program by Chris Philbrook from 6.30p.m. - 7.00p.m.  A cyber safety presentation will follow from 7.00p.m. - 8.00p.m. by Sonya Ryan, founder of the Carly Ryan Foundation.  These information sessions will be held in the Wittunga Hall at Grange Primary School.

AUTISM SUPPORT GROUP MEETING - Thursday 22nd February 7 p.m.

The first meeting of 2018 of the Autism Support Group will be held on Thursday 22nd February at 7 p.m. at Grange Baptist Church, on the corner of Surrey Street/Beach Street, Grange.  We welcome all families to join us, where you will have the opportunity to meet and talk with other families, in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.  If you wish to receive further information or would like to be added to the e-mailing list for this group, please contact me.

If you are interested in taking a more active role in the school community and wish to become a parent volunteer at our school, there are many ways that you can support our school.  We are always seeking volunteers to assist in:

  • Assisting in the Canteen
  • Supporting students in class reading/literacy/numeracy
  • Assisting with Sports Teams
  • Fund-raising activities for our school
  • Joining our school sub-committees/Governing Council
  • Helping on school excursions/camps
  • Learning Assistance Program

It is a legal requirement that all prospective volunteers provide a current DCSI screening - forms are available at the School Reception if you wish to apply.  It is also mandatory for all volunteers to attend a Responding to Abuse & Neglect (RAN) training session, which we will organise for you to attend at the school.

Volunteering at school is a great way for parents to engage in their child's education and provides the opportunity to meet other parents/caregivers with similar interests.  If you wish to volunteer or make a prospective enquiry, please provide your details to a member of staff at Reception or contact me direct.
