Prayer and Reflection

Heavenly Father,

with grateful hearts we remember

the power for goodness that Mary MacKillop is in our world.

On this her feast day

may we be touched anew with her spirit of charity and compassion

and generous participation in your mission.

We ask this in Jesus' name.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Tarlan and Mikani Ward and family following the passing of their grandfather.

School Masses

Parents and friends are invited to attend one of our  Assumption School Masses at 11:30am on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 August at St Nicholas' Church.

Principal's Report

HSC Trials

As the external HSC exams approach in Term 4, we pray that the hard work and dedicated effort being put in by our Year 12 students during the current trial exams bears good results. As most subjects use these trial exams and marks to finalise a major portion of the school-based assessment, the importance of these trials is significant. I pay tribute to the commitment of our Year 12 students in preparing for these exams. I also publicly acknowledge and thank the teaching staff for their generosity and commitment to excellence in providing extra study and tutoring sessions to ensure our students are well prepared.

Subject Selection

As the Year 10 and 8 students move through the next few weeks, they will be making some significant choices about their future patterns of study that will ultimately prepare them for a valued position in a contemporary Australian workforce. As most would note when reading the newspaper or listening to business analysts in recent times, the modern Australian workforce will continue to change rapidly. Hence, the jobs that had engaged previous generations may not exist or not exist in their current format into the future. Consequently, we have been working hard with our McCarthy students to reinforce the value of diversity, hard work and initiative to prepare for this modern context. We have especially highlighted the need for a broad base of high academic and vocational achievement to prepare for alternate career pathways that may present themselves. Who knows what sort of opportunities will exist in 2020 for our current Year 10 students? What sort of employment would our Year 8 students expect to apply for in 2022? No matter the answers, the bottom line is to work hard, show initiative and be open to new ways of doing things. Special thanks to Mrs Maxworthy, Mrs Barrett, Mr Kenniff and the Teaching and Learning team for their expert input and support of our students in providing a detailed landscape of information from which students can make informed decisions about their futures. I also acknowledge the support and attendance of so many Year 10 parents at the Year 11, 2018 Subject Selection Evening last night. It is important that we support our wonderful students and work in partnership to ensure they have the latest up-to-date information to make informed subject choices.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Banson and her family on the sudden passing of her mother last week. May she rest in peace.

Well done to each of our basketball teams who all won through to the final of the NSWCCC Junior Basketball Championships being held later this year in Penrith. By all reports our teams not only displayed excellent skills and teamwork but they also exhibited great sportsmanship on and off the court. We even made the sports report on NBN news!

We welcome Dekota Keldt (Year 8) to the McCarthy community.

Our annual College Walkathon will be held on Friday 8 September. All funds raised will go to St Luke's Health Centre - Uganda. As a school community, we ask for your support with this major event. We encourage each student to raise as much money as possible. An amount of $30 each would enable us to reach our target.

McCarthy's Got Talent

I commend the McCarthy Environmental Council members for organising this year's McCarthy's Got Talent event. Registrations close on 14 August. Auditions will be held in the Hall during Week 6. The final will be held after the Walkathon on 8 September at 1:00pm in the Hall.

School Social

The College will hold a school social on Wednesday 23 August commencing at 6:30pm. The theme is 60s v 80s. Tickets are $5 each and available from the SLC during Week 6.

Year 12 ADIG All-Rounder Award

Please find attached information regarding the Year 12 ADIG All-Rounder Award for 2017. The award recognises and rewards those students who have contributed to all aspects of school and community life. Nominations close September 1 2017.

May God go with you.

Mr Geoff McManus

TAS News

Term 3 is a busy time for our Year 12 TAS students as they complete their Trial HSC examinations. Agriculture, Food Technology and Information Processes and Technology all have three hour exams whereas Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design sit for 1½ hour papers.  These two practical subjects have shorter exams due to the major projects that the student have been working on since Term 4 last year.  Their projects consist of an item or items along with supporting documentation in the form of a folio. Industrial Technology’s submission date is 3:00pm Thursday 10 August for both item and folio while Textiles and Design is due 3:00pm Monday 14 August for both item/s and folio.  The textiles projects are couriered to Sydney to be externally marked and must be in Sydney by Monday 21 August whereas the timber projects will have external markers visit the school between 8:00am and 1:40pm on Friday 1 September.  Once the Industrial Technology projects are collected at school on submission day, they are securely kept in readiness for the markers to visit.

We wish the students well in these last days that they are able to work on their projects and hope that they are happy with the consistent effort they have made.

Ms Suzanne Day - TAS Coordinator

Careers News

Year 12 Students

Term 3 is always a very important, critical term for Year 12 students with Trial HSC exams, applications to be submitted (university, scholarships, colleges and jobs), dates to be remembered, choices to be made and many more things happening during their final school term.

To help Year 12 students with choices:

- all students will receive a copy of the UAC 2018 book on Tuesday in Week 5 to enable those wishing to apply to university to do so

- lunchtime sessions on applying to university and Early Entry Schemes will be held in Weeks 5 and 6

- guest speakers from universities will be visiting McCarthy

- full-time jobs or gap year jobs being offered by local employers are being posted on the McCarthy Careers Facebook page and in emails to students

- regular emails via CareersAlerts are being sent with lots of information and opportunities being sent to students and parents who subscribe.

Recent Events

In the last few weeks events have included:

- University Information Evening

- visit by ex-student Roy Barnes talking about his first year at Macquarie University and at Dunmore Lang College

- visit by a local employer and his apprentice to talk to students.

I also recently attended a function organised by UNE's School of Law where I met up with ex-McCarthy students. One is currently studying Criminology/Law while the others have graduated and are currently working with local law firms. Their pathways and careers were all different and I am hoping to arrange a visit by them to talk to current students considering studying law.

Subject Selection for Years 11 and 12

Current Year 10 students and parents are receiving a lot of information and making choices at the moment. It is very important that subjects are being selected based on reliable information, potential careers and future pathways that suit each student whatever their goals are for the future. Advice is available for both students and parents. I can be contacted at school via phone (67610800) or email: [email protected]. I am in the Careers Adviser's Office on Mondays and Fridays at lunchtime along with other times by appointment.

A similar invitation applies to students and parents currently in Year 11 who are considering HSC options and choices.

Diocesan Basketball

On Thursday 3 August, four McCarthy Basketball teams competed in the Diocesan Basketball Competition in order to qualify for the NSWCCC Junior Basketball Championships.

All four teams dominated throughout the day, despite a late charge from O'Connor Catholic College in the 7/8 Boys and 9/10 Boy divisions in the final games of the day, to determine which team qualified.

All four McCarthy teams placed first in their respective divisions, and will now travel to Penrith in October to compete in the NSWCCC Junior Basketball Championships held over two days.

I would like to thank Mr Marcus Chittick and Mrs Natahlia Bryant for their assistance in helping the day run smoothly, the parents who volunteered to assist in scoring the games, and our Year 11 referees who gave up their time to officiate on the day.
