Principal's Chat

Welcome - It's mid term already.

I thank all families for their patience this morning as the gates and learning centres were unlocked a little later than usual.  This was due to the whole staff photo that was scheduled for 8.15 am this morning.  The photographer certainly felt organising the staff posed a greater challenge than our students!!

On Monday we have our first whole school assembly at 9.00 in our school sports centre.  Along with awards and general business the student leaders for 2020 will announced and presented to the community.  All welcome.

First Parents & Friends Meeting for 2020

We have set a time for our first Parents & Friends meeting for 2020.  I encourage all parents that are available to come and join.  It would be great to have some new members join us.  I am looking forward to working with our very dynamic group of parents to further improve, serve and fundraise for our community.

Date: 5th March

Time: 2.00 - 3.00 pm

Venue: Staffroom

Wyndham Vale Community Gathering

In the past the community masses that have been held here at school have had limited attendance.  These masses are for our own Wyndham Vale community and it would be great to see greater attendance.  We would like to hear your views so we can plan our community masses and activities for the 2020 year.  A general meeting will be held on Monday 24th February 2020 at Our Lady of the Southern Cross Primary School 2/20 Howqua Way, Manor Lakes, VIC 3024 at 7:00 pm.

Winter Uniform Fitting for New Families

On Wednesday 26th from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm and Wednesday 4th from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm there will be appointments offered for winter uniform fittings for prep and new families.   A link will be available on dojo and the school website.

Prep Students

The year Preps have continued to settle into the routines of school.  The Preps have Wednesdays off school until after the long weekend in March.  From Wednesday 11th March Prep students will attend school for full weeks.  I think there will be some very tired preps  by the end the school week for the rest of this term!!

Ash Wednesday Liturgy

Please join us in the OLSC sports centre next Wednesday, 26th February at 9.00am as we begin the Church season of Lent. All families are welcome and we look forward to seeing you then.

Opening of the School Year Mass

All families are invited and encouraged to attend our opening school mass.  It will be held on Thursday 5th March.  Mass will commence at 9.00am and will be held in our Sports Centre. Please mark this date in your diaries and I encourage all members of our parent community to join us if you are able.

Absences and Change of Details

A reminder to all parents to let the school know if students will not be attending school.  This can be done the day prior to the absence or via phone call /message on the morning of the school absence.   All schools are mandated to account for school absences to ensure the safety of our students.

If your contact details have changed (including address and phone number) over the summer break please update family details in the office.

Car Park Reminders - Student safety is a number one priority

Please take great care when collecting and dropping students off at school.  The only place to drop students off and pick up before and after school is the drop off / pick up zone alongside the school hall.  There is always a staff member on duty in this area to ensure the safety of our students.  The carpark and road at the rear of the school is extremely congested at the beginning and end of the day and so I ask for all drivers to obey the school and road rules and be patient during busy times.   These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of all students.

National Ride to School Day

National Ride2School Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel and one of the most exciting days on the school calendar. It is a day where students and parents discover the joy of riding and kick-start healthy habits for the future.

This year National Ride2School Day will be held on Friday the 13th of March and students, along with their families, are encouraged to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school. All students who actively travel to school will be in the running to win an exciting prize so buckle those helmets, polish those wheels and get those legs moving!

           Prayers from our Sacramental Students

Last week we shared a wonderful evening with students in Year three and above who are preparing for the Sacrament of Penance on Wednesday, 18th March.

Part of the evening was to write a family prayer to God and below are a selection we shall share  over the next few newsletters. Please keep all these children in your prayers.

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, bless my family here in Australia and those living in New Zealand. Keep them safe from all harm that may come their way. We ask this in Your name. Amen (Noah U)

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, thank you for all you have given us. Please keep my family protected from harm and sadness. May we continue to enjoy spending time together, sharing joy, celebrating happy occasions to make happy memories and also be there at times of comfort. Please keep us safe and healthy. We ask this in Your name. Amen (Harper N)

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Bless us with good health and help us love each other more each day. We ask this in Your name. Amen (Ethan L)

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, please bless our family with love and joy. We pray that all families stay safe throughout the year, and that everyone can help those less fortunate that us. We ask this in Your name. Amen (Ayden C)

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, in you, my family is in good hands. I pray for your wonderful blessing upon them, and for each one to feel your presence, strength and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen (Matot M)

Dear Lord, Our Loving Father, bless me and my family and all my friends and teachers. We praise you in the name of the Lord. Bless us all. Amen (Manuella B)

Learning & Teaching

Big Write is one, of many, writing sessions in the week. The aim of a Big Write is for students to be able to start and finish a piece of writing, within a given time frame showcasing the skills they have learnt about during the previous fortnight. It has a special atmosphere to promote calm and creative writers and encourages students to reflect on their learning and how they can improve.

The night prior to Big Write we ask that you work with your child & have a Big Talk session at home. Your child’s Learning Group teacher will post a stimulus for Big Write on Dojo to talk about. Please read the following:

To My Family

I need to talk about my ideas and opinions with as many family members as possible.  A great time to do this is while we are all sitting at the table for dinner. Could we please not have the TV on so that I can concentrate.

I would love to hear your opinions and ideas as well as tell you mine.  Please remember to use the word ‘because’ to explain why you think that and remind me to do the same. That way when I do my Big Write I will have so many ideas to make my writing exciting.

Can you give me some :

Vocabulary: exciting, interesting words to use

Connectives: words that I can use to join my ideas together

Openers: amazing ways to start my sentences

Punctuation: suggest when I could use commas, exclamation marks etc.

Thanks, I know that with your help I will be an amazing writer.

Your child.

Playgroup 2020

Yes we are starting Playgroup again in 2020.

Please join Elizabeth and Mariella on Thursday afternoon from 2.00- 3.00pm in the back Portable.

We would love to see some of our old faces and we welcome new families to our group.

We are starting next Thursday 27th February.

Please sign in at the front office and Elizabeth will be there to greet you.

It has been wonderful to see some of the new Preps in 2020 who were in our Playgroup last year, give us a friendly wave or stop for a chat while we are on Yard Duty during the week.

They have settled into OLSC so comfortably.  They are very familiar with their surroundings.

We offer the children the opportunity to develop fine motor skills - painting, pasting, play dough, cutting.

Story Time is a favourite of the families with music, movement, finger puppets and animation.

We are constantly building the children's oral language skills through conversations, sharing and friendships.

Please join us Mariella and Elizabeth.

Learning Centre 4

Congratulations and thank you to all the Senior students who applied for the Student Leadership Teams. We are proud of all our Senior Students and stress that they are all leaders in our school. It was a very difficult decision to finalise our Student Leadership Teams for 2020.

Learning Centre Two

Yr. 4 - Monday, 11th May - Wednesday, 13th May
Yr. 3 - Wednesday, 13th May - Thursday, 14th May

(buses brining Year Three on Wednesday will return with Year Four students - so they will see each other for an hour or so.)
Depart school - 9:15am (Year Three/Four)
Return school - 1.00pm (Year Three/Four)
I have included the link to YMCA for your benefit: http://www.camps.ymca.org.au/locate/anglesea.html
We will send for permission via the Parent Portal from Weeks Five/Six but if you have any questions please see me at school or via email - pmcdowell@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au
These experiences are so valuable to children gaining independence and challenging themselves in a friendly environment with peers and teachers. We look forward to sharing our adventures via Class Dojo when on camp.

Learning Centre Three

We are very excited to be studying the Book Author - Nick Bland this term in the 1/2 English Lessons.

"I am a self-taught illustrator/author and simply observed all the wonderful work done by others and practised my own style until it looked and ”sounded” professional."

Nick Bland

Nick Bland was born on a farm in the Australian Yarra Valley in 1973. The son of an artist and a primary school teacher, he spent his early childhood climbing haystacks and making mischief in his father's studio. When he moved to “the bush” at age 6, he discovered a wonderful new world and his creativity bloomed. Nick always told family and friends he was going to be a cartoonist and a writer. It wasn't until 1996, when he stumbled into a bookshop job, that he finally found the medium that would bring those two loves together.

Each week the Learning Groups will pick a new book from Nick Bland's collection to study.

We will be looking at how Nick Bland, the author gets ideas on what to write in his stories, we will discuss the front cover of the book and ask the questions "what can you see?" Who are the characters in this book? Where is the setting or place in this book? Can you tell me your favourite part of this story?

It would be wonderful if you could take time to discuss or read with your child some of the books they will be reading in their Learning Groups over the term.
