New arrangements and special events for 2020

Bell times:

This term we will be trialling ringing the first bell of the day at 8.50am. This is five minutes earlier than last year.

The reason for the trial is to look at the effect on the start of the day’s first learning session. By having a slightly earlier start we are aiming for all students to be ready in classrooms to commence the first activity of the day promptly by 9.00 am.

At 9.00 am there will be a second bell. Any students who arrive after this time will need to be signed in at the office as they are late.

Information Night for all Year Levels: Wednesday 19th February

Each year the staff prepare an information session for each year level. The information includes an overview of the year’s curriculum, home learning program, camps, excursions and routines for the classroom. Numerous other topics relevant to the year level are also discussed and there is a Q & A time at the end.

Over the past few years, we have noticed a drop off in attendance at these nights, so we are trying a different approach this year. On Wednesday 19th February, between 5:30 and 7:30 pm, the school will be open for families to visit classrooms and attend a short information session for each year level. These will be staggered throughout the night so families can attend the sessions relevant to their children and spend time in their children’s classrooms in between.

Specific details of the Information Night, including a schedule, will be published next week but we ask you to put the date and sometime aside to attend.

A reminder to parents and carers to record absences on COMPASS at the start of the day, before 9 am. After you select the reason for the absence from the drop down box, please include a brief outline of the nature of the absence/illness in the ‘Details/Comment’ box. If your child is sick and attends a doctor, please request a medical certificate and send a copy of this to school.

Grandparents Day: Friday 20th March

Being a Grandparent is a great privilege and we love to see students and their grandparents, or the special people in their lives, spending time in the classroom together. This year Grandparent’s Day will be on Friday 20th March. Please note this in your diaries and we will send out further information in the next few weeks.

Family Movie Night:

Another date to mark down is Saturday 21st March, which is our whole school social night for Term 1. There will be a picnic and movie night on the oval and we hope to see all families enjoying a pleasant evening watching the big screen under the stars. More details will be coming from the PA in the next 2 weeks.

Disabled Car Parking Spot

A friendly reminder to all who utilise our disabled parking spot, at the front of the school, that it  is used by a growing number of our families. To ensure everyone needing to use this facility has a fair opportunity, please endeavour to use it in a similar way as the ‘Kiss and Go’ parking spots, at peak pick up and drop off times, by not leaving your car unattended and moving on as soon as your passengers are safely unloaded or are on board.

Thank you Watering Angels

A huge thank you to the Hassett, McCulloch Atkinson, and Hatzis families for their time and effort during the long holiday break to ensure out beautiful new front gardens were watered and continued to thrive. Whilst we were lucky with some intermittent rain, our team of waterers did a super job. Thank you also to Miss Ross for her excellent initiative in organising the roster.

Our YRPS School Captains 2020

School Captains - Jack Mc & Skye M

Hi, my name is Jack and I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself. I am 11 years old, turning 12 in April.

I live in Warrandyte with my Mum, Sam, my dad, Adam, and my two sisters, Caitlin and Isla, who are 9 and 7 years old.

When I'm at home some of the things I like to do are play basketball, draw, ride my BMX, play on my Xbox, and assemble scale model fighter aircrafts.

I play basketball for Yarra Road and cricket in Interschool Sport. At school my favourite subjects are Writing and Literacy and I am in 6V.

A few more facts about me are that I'm a bit of a nerd, If I could eat pizza for breakfast I would, and when I grow up I would like to be a fighter pilot.

I'm really looking forward to being School Captain, hope I do a good job and I hope you all think so too.

Thanks for listening

Jack Mc

Hi I'm Skye, I'm this years school captain. I will be helping run assembly every week along with Zara, Jack and Reuben. I play netball and after school basketball, I have an older brother, a dog, I love going to the beach with my friends and family. I also like playing and having fun with my friends. I like to cook and try new things but my favourite thing to do is go on holidays and have fun!

I play after-school Basketball, Netball and domestic Basketball. My favourite subjects in school are Maths, Music and P.E. This year I am really looking forward to production, camp and being in a class with all of my friends. I am in 6S with Mrs Smith, who makes all of our work super fun. So now that you know a bit about me, all I have left to do is wish you a great year. Have fun, enjoy yourself and thank you for listening to my speech.

Zara T

Good morning everyone my name is Reuben S and I am your 2020 boy school vice captain. My 3 favourite things would be sport, eating and of course my family. I have 2 brothers that go to this school and my Mum who is the Performing Arts teacher. Then I have my dad and he is the coach of my footy team and works for Coca Cola. Sport would be my favourite hobby. My favourite sports would be football and second would be basketball. My favourite things to do away from home would be going on the switch when (I am allowed) and playing in my backyard with the family. I am very happy that I get to be your boy School Vice Captain and I hope everyone has an enjoyable year.

Our School

Together we can make it great!

Let’s BE THERE for each other by staying focused on what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. A kind gesture can MAKE THEIR DAY when we do things big and small to make them feel good. Good and bad things happen every day, but you can always CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE. We know learning is more fun when we throw ourselves into it, so lets PLAY!

YRPS School Values

Respect, Responsibility, Excellence, Confidence and Resilience.

Stars of the Week will be presented next Monday morning 10th February at Assembly.

Welcome to the new Preps of 2020

See me skip, see me run,

I’m going to school like everyone

See me work, see me play

I began my new learning journey

At Yarra Road today!

Welcome to all of the new prep students and their families.

We have had a great start  learning all about school and the things that we have to do each day when we arrive.

At play time we get to play with our fabulous grade 5 buddies. They are showing us all of the wonderful things that we can see and do at our school. We can’t wait to read some stories and to have a Teddy Bears picnic  with them later in the term.

We have already started learning about the alphabet letters and the sounds that they make. We have also been creating pictures of ourselves using cutting and pasting. We have even been to our first assembly.

We  are very excited about being at school, meeting our new friends and getting to know all of the teachers throughout the school.

Year 1 & 2

Around our Level

The children in Level 2 have made a great start back at school. We have been setting up our classroom routines and our Literacy and Numeracy programs.

This week we have been learning about the Readers/Writers Workshop, writing recounts about our holidays. In spelling we have been learning about the letter ‘b’ and learning about numbers and place value. The children have attended specialist classes in PE, Art, Performing Arts and Indonesian.

Year 3 & 4

Around our Level

Students have been settling into life in Year 3 and 4 by participating in 'getting to know you' games and activities. Some students have learned about the importance of 'bucket filling', or making sure others are feeling happy. Other activities have included birthday graphs, the scoop on friendship, and decorating an individual shoe.

Last Friday students met with Mr Quick as he explained how 3/4 sport will work this year.

We are looking forward to a year filled with adventurous learning!

Mrs Haysom, Miss Dixon, Miss Stevens, Mrs Pfander, and Mrs Amarsi

Year 5 & 6

Around our Level

Year 5 have enjoyed helping their buddies settle into school life. They have been helping with looking after them at snack and lunch time. Today some of the little buddies came into the BER for Level 5/6 lounge, which is when the Yr 5 & 6 students can stay in for the first half of lunch and play table tennis, board games, colour or just chat.

In class we have been decorating book boxes and getting our Reader’s and Writer’s notebooks started, as well as maths of course. This term our integrated topic is ‘Ethics and Emotions’. Our new Year 6 students are enjoying being the big kids and role models of the school.
