Principal News

Welcome to our new student Maximillian who joined our Year Prep class on Monday. Maximillian has settled in so well, that after just one day at school, he was performing with his fellow Year Prep and Year One/Two students in the puppet play on Tuesday.

Congratulations to our students in Years Prep to Two, on their fabulous puppet shows presented to our school community on Tuesday. It was great to see students from different year levels working together, to present really interesting stories using the skill of puppetry. Thank you to Bethany, Marty and Jia for giving your students such a great learning experience.

School Dinner Dance

Our school dinner dance is rapidly approaching and our parents in the Parents and Friend's committee are completing the final arrangements. Some families have already organised their table for the night and have completed the form in the school office, detailing their seating arrangements.

Remember  that the dinner dance is on Friday 15th November and tickets can be booked through the Trybooking link

The event will be held in our parish hall which is situated on David Street, just around the corner from our school. Ticket prices are as follows: $35.00 for adults (ie 13 years and above) and $15.00 for primary aged students, whilst preschoolers are free.

Music from the Heart

Earlier this week some important information was sent home about purchasing the CD of all our students singing, and arrangements for our school concert to be held at the Thornbury Theatre, on Thursday 21st November. As the night draws closer, more information will be sent home to families. In the meantime I ask that you continue stay informed by reading our weekly newsletter and other correspondence that is sent home.

Displayed below, is just some of the artwork submitted by our students in the competition for having the right to depict the cover of our CD, "Music from the Heart". I don't envy the job of our judges with so many creative pieces of artwork entered.

Thank You

I would like to express my gratitude to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Pty Ltd, for their continued support of our school. Obviously a very community minded company, they make a donation to a school each year on behalf of each of their employees. Julie (Year 3) and Sean's (Year Prep) father Lip, is an employee of the company, and each year a donation to our school is made. Thank you on behalf of the Sacred Heart School community.

Our Catholic Education Melbourne School Improvement Survey data (CEMSIS), arrived early last week. Thank you to those families who participated in the survey. Your responses are a very important part of our continued improvement strategy. In the coming weeks, the staff will sit down with Catholic Education Melbourne staff and analyse the data to set directions for next year. I will feedback the results of the survey in our newsletter before the end of the year.

Yours sincerely

Mark Tierney

Is your child spending too much time gaming?

There is no magic number of hours, but your child may be spending too much time playing games if their gaming starts to have negative impacts on them or your family.

Look out for signs such as:

  • less interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport
  • not doing so well at school
  • tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches or eye strain
  • changes in eating patterns
  • reduced personal hygiene
  • obsession with particular websites or games
  • anger when being asked to take a break from online activity, or appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer
  • becoming withdrawn from friends and family

In some cases, setting firm limits as a family may be enough to help address too much gaming. But there may also be underlying problems like depression and anxiety that are linked to problematic internet use.

Our guide to managing time online for parents and carers can help you get things under control.

Special Visit

On Wednesday 23rd October we had the privilege to welcome two Divine Word Missionaries: Marius from Madagascar and Clement from Ghana. They spoke to students in Years Three - Six  about the meaning of 'mission' and how it should lead to action. Showing love to one another and sharing what we have is mission. Through Baptism we are sent fourth to let our actions follow. Students discovered that all of us can be  missionaries by the way we treat one another.  It is about how we treat other people to show the love of God to people we meet. Clement also shared his drumming expertise. Our students were impressed by their words and had the opportunity to better understand the role of missionaries.

Walk To School Month

October is walk to school month.

Lets get walking!

Next week, on the 29th of October, the school leaders will be hosting a lapathon where all the students will walk laps to see if they can get the most laps out of their class. As the students are walking the laps, Tyson, Makayla, Jasmine, Anni, Sylvie and Andrew  will be counting the laps of our chosen grades. If a student were to get the most laps in their class they will get a small prize. After the event there will be fruit platters served courtesy of the Darebin Council. Each level will also walk to Ray Bramham Gardens  on their chosen day to have lunch so all children can join in the fun.

Last week we said goodbye to Renee and Michelah, pre service teachers from ACU, who had been with us for the last 7 weeks. They worked well with teachers and students and we wish them well in their teaching careers.  On their last day, some of the teachers were lucky to catch a performance from some of the choir as they sang for Renee and Michelah.

Some students even learnt how to do some different magic tricks. We mastered our chess skills and learnt how to make bubbles.

Outdoors we love playing group games. On Friday, some of our friends made a GIANT hut to play in!
